DESOTO, TEXAS
Just won the Elite Women's BMX National Championship title, from lane 8:) Since the transponders weren't working we had no lap times or lane choice, which actually was a bit better I thought, mixed things up. I had my best first straight pull of the weekend and got to the first turn first. Arielle was there, but I had the edge and kept it going. Jill 1st, Arielle 2nd, Stephanie 3rd.
The semi-final of the mens races took out a lot of fast guys. Herman crashed leading one of them, stumpy, Mikey, Ciasar, Tyler Brown, Bubba, all were out. Kyle walked away with the final, Danny C 2nd, Donny 3rd.
Thanks to GT, Red Bull, Oakley, and Greg.

DESOTO, TX
We found out last week that Usa Cycling national champs are now part of the olympic points schedule. Weird that we are at an ABA race sandwiched in the middle of their events, I'm not sure how or why that is, but here we are...Desoto Texas, trying to avoid hitting all the little kids on pit bikes and razor scooters in the parking lots:). Track is different than what we are used to, sorta flat start, mellow jumps, dirt turns, aba organizers, but it should be fun. Race Saturday.
"Art of the Can" is an exhibition that always impresses me. It is open to anyone, and inspired by the ever beautiful Red Bull can. In 2004, I had a stockpile of empty cans ready, but the joinery and build required some skill sets, time, and a metal shop that I didn't quite possess. Needless to say, other people have followed through with their projects and made some intricate sculptures.
Next Exhibition is in Houston July 11-25,,, http://www.redbullartofcan.com
ESPN film crew came out today to do a feature on me for the TV show E:60, should broadcast in about a month. Here is info on the show espnmediazone.com

We finally got around to skulling (aka rowing) in a quad the other day. Such a simple movement, but a lot more technical than you would think. Keeping the oars from clipping the water, and getting both hands to coordinate and flip the oars is tricky. I will say this though, it is a peaceful sport, gliding across the water. You can tell that these guys have put in about a million hours into it, they don't even have to talk, just sit in a rhythm, flow, and breathe. Thanks to Matt, Flick, and Franny:)
Some art to "really tie the room together":) This retired pilot guy named Cecil was selling homemade popcan planes in the park today, so I stepped up and bought one. His craftsmanship was pro, correct logo placement and all, seamless.:)

NEW YORK, NEW YORK
A day and a half is not enough time to see Manhattan. This was my first visit to NYC, and it was everything I thought it would be, plus some of the coolest shoes, best coffee, designer spaces, art, boutiques, and most unique individuals i have ever seen. Style is plentiful in this city, best of all worlds combined. We only had a taste of it, walking through, since we had back to back to back appointments with mags, educating the people and giving a face to words, but Every single editor and building had a flavor all its own, each one an adventure....
Here's the list: Sports illustrated, SI Kids, Antenna, Complex, Cosmo girl, Men's health, YRB, New York Times, ESPN, EXPN.

WASHINGTON D.C.
From Florida, we have been on a crazy media tour!!. Started out with a flight to Washington DC to visit USA TODAY newspaper, then a train to NYC. Gt has hired a New York based PR firm called MFA to handle marketing and PR leading up to the Olympic games, so here we are.
Anywho,, you walk into USA Today and it is a vast space with endless marble floors and staff, think like 300 reporters??. Our role in all of this is to, first be fast and make the team, but also explain to people who have never seen bmx and walk through the experience of being involved with the sport, explain the course, the bikes, the training. It is pretty full on, and people are eager to know about it. Sal is the sports writer covering cycling, among other things, he is a bike rider and enthusiast himself, so he knew a bit about what we do, but there are a lot of gaps to fill in for the general public.
Green screens, photo studios, editing rooms, whole floor just for the sports section. Look for us to hopefully appear featured in the USA Today sports section closer to the games. Their website will also have some video interviews and interactive guides. Usa Today being located in the nation's capitol, Sal has ridden with George W. Bush. Turns out the president has some fitness and rides mtn bikes, but unfortuneatly for him bike riding isn't the cure he needs to fix the economy:).
Riding Under the Influence (riding while intoxicated):Riding a bicycle under the influence in Arizona could be considered the same as driving under the influence in an automobile. Also, riding a horse under the influence on a public street is considered a DUI!
WEST PALM, FLORIDA Today was such a long day. It was around 89 degrees with humidity, and 2 hrs of delays trying to figure out transponders. I salvaged a podium, so on to the next one, good job to my roommate Arielle. Mikey finished 4th today after winning nearly every lap, but Kyle won and I'm pretty sure secured his spot on the olympic team. Cool to see NPR public radio out here doing a feature, and the associated press. youtube

Thanks to justin Kosman for some of the photos. Stoked on my victory today, finally took one from start to finish. 4 brackets of Women (22riders) for semis, a bunch of international girls showed up which was cool.
56 elite men riders. Mikey was battling with Donny for the lead in the men's final and got bumped causing him to crash into turn 2, Kyle took over in the end with some mad pull down the last straight.
Anybody got time to fight the UCI for equal prize money? $1200 for men $375 women, unbelievably weak!!

WEST PALM BEACH, FLORIDA
We're in Florida this weekend for a couple of UCI Olympic points qualifying rounds. It is so hot, and the entire track is as hard as pavement, not an ounce of dust!! They coated the clay surface with soiltac, which is like a dust reducer/soil stabilizer, commonly used on fire roads to prevent erosion and dust. (but also good for dirt that doesn't pack well, I bought some for my little pump track, RIP:). Makes tire choice pretty damn easy though, no tread. Next time I will have to borrow some tires and tire warmers from the GP guys and get this party started right.

Well,,, this is something I would have never done on my own, but I got talked into going to shoot 12 GA shotgun at the shooting range with a bunch of the rowers. Been training really hard, so this was an activity to think about something other than bikes, and for the experience. My first practice shot was horrible, got a little bruise from the kickback, but actually hit the first four discs that came flying out and destroyed 13 out of 25 flying targets, which is decent I suppose. Can't say I enjoyed this activity for moral reason, I would hope to never fire a gun or be around one being fired in real life. Anyway, my neck is now a darker shade of red:), and one more thing to check off the list, yee haw.

SAN DIEGO, CA
Skiba, of the guys here at the training center found out about some local ping pong tournament in San diego, so we went to watch the action. I will have to admit, it was one of the nerdiest things I have ever been too. 20 tables lined up, guys with special ping pong shoes, paddles, shorts, sweating like maniacs having to change out their shirts every round. The skills, pace, and characters were something else, definitely not a cool kid hang out, but fun none the less, even a couple old timers having a go:) . Skiba is a decent player, and he got smoked by some little 8 year old sniper. Never seen anything like it.
Here is a sweet link to John Gibson "Best of 2007" mountain bike photo gallery. I feel honored to have 4 shots in there:)... gibsonpicturesGreatestHIts2007

We were talking to some of the sprint Kayakers,,, apparently there is an ongoing $200 challenge to anyone who can paddle 5 times without tipping over. The boats are narrow, but we thought it couldn't be THAT hard!!! Guess again, it's damn hard!!. Nobody, in 5 attempts could even fire off one stroke or stay up for a split second. Gives a whole new perspective to that sport, it's not something you could just instantly step into and be good at. According to legend, one of the top women, Carrie Johnson, can stand up with one foot and twirl the paddle. That seems impossible, but then again, they have the skills. Thanks to Taran for taking us out for a laugh.
