Fresno Smooth

FRESNO, CA
FYI. Woodward Park in Fresno, Ca probably has the second best BMX track in the country (chula Vista #1). Make the mission to central California and go ride it.:). Nice steep starting hill, some good combination jumps, pro sections, etc. This park is huge- 300 acres, so you can walk the dog, have a picnic, feed the ducks, and also ride their community bike park. Haven't ever really seen a city park with this kind of agglomeration of intermediate dirt jumps and skill development areas, but it was impressive in both volume and smoothness, Fresno smooth? Scott Hart knows:). (This is about 1/7 of the bike park area). NO relation to camp Woodward- it's named after a local who donated this land, Ralph Woodward or something:)

Tour of California- finish

ESCONDIDO, CA
Watched the start and finish of the final stage of the Tour of California- Rancho Bernardo to Escondido. Pro road races have such a different atmosphere than any cycling event I have been to. As a spectator It's more catered towards the wine and cheese crowd with an emphasis on tourism and community. Unless you follow the peloton by bike or car, you only see the riders ride past for a blink of an eye. The start wasn't really anything super exciting, some interviews, photos, the lineup, then they take off at snail speed. A Sprint start blowout isn't smart with 90+ miles and massive climbs:) . Too bad, I do love a good snap:). The excitement picks up though when breakaway groups form a bit further in, and for sure the last 10 minutes from the finish when you hear the choppers circling and can see the intensity building via the jumbotron T.V........

Fontana Winter Series

FONTANA, CA
I cruised up to Fontana yesterday to spend a little time with the locals- check out the Winter series. Fontana is the only consistent gravity mountain bike racing venue going on in southern California, so it is awesome that Donny Jackson puts his time into this, as well as ODI, and their other sponsors....

Tour of California

The tour of California is America's largest road Cycling event, but I can honestly say I have never watched it. The finish is only 33 miles north of here, in Escondido, so I going to enthrall myself with this final stage on sunday. Hopefully I am educated enough now, after 30 minutes of cramming, not to feel like a dumbass when I show up:). What I have concluded so far is that Levi Leipheimer is leading after stage 5, 3 to go, Time trial is tomorrow, and Lance Armstrong is on Twitter, which is weird. twitter.com/lancearmstrong. :) Tour of Calfornia

Valentine's Supercross

SAN DIEGO, CA
Anyone reading this update, probably knows how much I love supercross MX races,,, so since Bryn and I are separated by the Pacific ocean, this was not a bad way to spend love day. Monk Dog, my former MTB mechanic (who is now driving the rig for the TroyLee factory SX team), hooked up prime seats, and we enjoyed the show right by the first turn. Watching a SX race can be a bit confusing for some, so it helps to be an educated fan; know who everyone is, the points, riders, their teams, colors, etc. But everyone knows talent when they see it, and there is plenty of it in this sport. Fireworks, torches, rider intros, skits and skanks help connect the dots too. The show moves along pretty flawless these days and is like 100 times bigger production than any bike event...

Sportsmobile

FRESNO, CA
I made a trip up to Fresno to check out this company called Sportsmobile. They fabricate and install custom interiors for Sprinter vans, Fords, Chevys, etc. You can take any van and transform it into a livable custom RV that is easy to drive, park, carry bikes, and fit 2-3 people comfortably. There are so many options for these campers, the possibilities are endless...
